A Tibetan Thangka is a painting of a sacred image or deity on cloth (usually cotton canvas or silk). The delicate, detailed imagery is hung in meditation centers, personal ritual spaces, and even yoga classrooms – anywhere we would like to remind ourselves of the Divine. These richly colored paintings are intended to bring the essence of Spirit into our homes and sacred spaces.

These are ancient Tibetan mountain goddesses who were won over by Padmasambhavaand bound by oath to Buddhist dharma. At the foot of the jo-mo-gans-dkar mountain are five glacial lakes with water of different colours corresponding to the goddesses. Their worship is common among the Gelukpas and a chapel is dedicated to them on the upper floor of the Jo-khang the main cathedral of Lhasa. Their worship is conducted in a lonely but lovely wood blooming with flowers. Besides offering of food and drinks, special offerings of medicines, bronze mirror, crystal, spotless turquoise also are made.

The Five Sisters are:

1. Center: Mangala Dirghayushi (Bkra-shis-tshe-rin-ma): She is the chief deity holding a long life vase.

2. Upper Left: Sumati (Mi-gyo-blo-bzan-ma)

4. Lower Left: Sumukhi (Mthin-gi-zhal-bzan-ma)
